Mmm, coffee… almost everybody drinks it… some people have 3-4 cups per day or more.
But most people don’t think of it as a “health drink”. And it’s certainly NOT healthy the way most people make it with loads of added sugar or artificial sweeteners and artificial creamers.
But I’ll give you my tips here on how I make a healthier cup of coffee and what to watch out for…
First, you may have seen debate in the past about how coffee has some compounds in it that could have negative health effects such as small amounts of acrylamides or other possibly harmful compounds in brewed coffee. But, the good news is that coffee has such high concentrations of beneficial antioxidants, phenolic nutrients, chlorogenic acids, and other healthy compounds, that it more than counteracts any bad compounds.
In fact, coffee provides the biggest source of antioxidants for most Americans… although that mostly has to do with the fact that many Americans don’t get enough antioxidants from fruits and veggies, so coffee ends up being their biggest source. You should try to diversify your sources of antioxidants from fruits, veggies, spices, herbs, berries, beans, unsweetened organic cocoa, teas, and yes, even coffee if you like it.

Since I’ve been promoting hydration asthe most important part of the alkaline diet I’ve had heaps of questions asking me whether herbal teas are alkaline, so I thought it would be a nice idea to blog about my favourite alkaline herbal teas!
Is Boiled Water Alkaline?
The first thing to address is this – is boiled water alkaline? The answer is yes! Water that is ‘naturally’ alkaline due to ionization or mineral content holds it’s pH wonderfully. You can use a water ionizer, alkaline water jug or other filter to make alkaline water, boil this and you’re set. If you’ve ionized the water, it also holds its ORP too.
As for pH drops, I would add these to the tea after it has boiled and cooled a little (i.e. just before you drink it). I’m personally not that comfortable boiling pH drops. No scientific reason, it just doesn’t sit well with me!

Taking an all-natural route to health and fitness is a great way of living. Nature is bountiful with natural medicinal benefits, and it’s best to put these gifts to good use. With that, I share with you six healing foods that you can substitute for your medication:
Basil. You might know this particular herb as a flavor enhancer in cooking, but basil has also been known to cure headaches and muscle pains. Take 3 to 4 fresh basil leaves, pour boiling water onto the leaves, and let sit for a few minutes. You just made your all-natural basil tea, which is an effective pain reliever.
Aloe vera. Famous for its moisturizing benefits, this plant is made mostly of water. Its sap contains enzymes and amino acids that help moisturize the skin and repair skin damage (especially sunburn). The best thing about aloe vera? You can grow it in your arrow home garden inside pots, and all it needs is sunlight and water. If you burn yourself, just break off a piece of the plant, extract the sticky sap, and apply it on the burned area like ointment.
